Breast Cancer is Preventable - Real story from Aparna Pengat

"Breast Cancer is Preventable" , Read the story of a women...
Aparna Pengat

"Prevention is better than cure. The medical fraternity keeps reinforcing this thought and for a good reason too. Although in my case I couldn't prevent the disease, but I could cure it due to the precautionary measures I undertook early on," says breast cancer survivor Dr. Hemangi Jerajani.Mumbai based Dr. Jerajani is the Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology at the Lokmanya Tilak Medical College (LTM) and LTM General Hospital. In the year 2000 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. "Detected is how I would put it. Being in the medical profession, I was already aware of the fact that I had all the factors that could result in cancer. So it wasn't really a nasty surprise, but an expected development, which I was prepared to tackle head on," she affirms. Here she talks about how breast cancer can be prevented and why health tests should be a routine part of your life."I knew I had it coming."I was aware that I had possible factors that led me to breast cancer.Don't get me wrong, just because I was aware of it doesn't mean I was inviting it. I had my first child at a very late age as we were all studying then. Plus I could not breast feed my baby for long as I did not have enough milk production.I also had a history of familial obesity and blood sugar. Although my diet was normal, for some time I was on the wrong side of the weight scale.I was made aware of these factors during my regular tests. So I knew that I am the one who would get it."My children are prone to it."Simply because I have had it. It is genetic. In retrospect, I think I know that some of my relatives did die of cancer, although at that time there was not so much awareness about it. But then it had the resultant effect of getting passed on to the next generation. So I have already informed my kids and my maternal cousins to take care of themselves as they are prone to get it at an early age. They needn't wait till they are menopausal when women are susceptible to get it."Regular tests saved me."I used to go for my regular checkups and that is one thing I must thank myself for.I had a small spot on my breast which I couldn't feel at all. My regular breast examination did not give any indication of cancer. But when I went for my serial mammography, it picked up a centimetre sized tumour.Thankfully, it was detected at the earliest, and I had the lymph nodes removed though it did not contain any cancer cells. But it had to be removed so as to prevent it from spreading onto my other breast. The early detection and proper prognosis of the situation saved me from having pain killers. I was asked to undergo radiation for two and half months and continue taking the medication tamoxifen for five years."Being young does not mean you are immune."Although, cancer especially of uterine and breast are more common in women who have crossed the menopausal age, that is 45 years and above, youngsters are not exactly immune to it either.Today, we are all into aping the lifestyle of the west including their diet. Remember what is good for you may not be good for others.Similarly the diet of the west is modified and suited to their climate and lifestyle. Aping that blindly is a major trigger factor for diseases. There is wisdom in our diet too.Lack of physical exercise, obesity, blood sugar, diabetes, delaying having children, non breast feeding combined with lack of awareness on cancer, sex education and reproductive health could predispose you to breast, uterine or cancer of cervix.

Know about Mammography treatment for breast cancer

Mammography is the process of using low-dose X-rays (usually around 0.7 mSv) to examine the human breast. It is used to look for different types of tumors and cysts. Mammography has been proven to decline mortality from breast cancer. No other imaging technique has been shown to reduce risk, but self-breast examination (SBE) and physician examination are necessary for regular breast care. In some countries routine (annual to five-yearly) mammography of older women is encouraged as a screening method to diagnose early breast cancer. Screening mammograms were first proven to save lives in research published by Sam Shapiro, Philip Strax and Louis Venet in 1966.
Risk Factors of Mammography treatment for breast cancer :
There is always a slight chance of cancer from radiation. However, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the risk. The effective radiation dose from a mammogram is about 0.7 mSv, which is about the same as the average person receives from background radiation in three months. Federal mammography guidelines require that each unit be checked by a medical physicist every year to ensure that the unit operates correctly. See the Safety page for more information about radiation dose.. False Positive Mammograms. Five percent to 15 percent of screening mammograms require more testing such as additional mammograms or ultrasound. Most of these tests turn out to be normal. If there is an abnormal finding a follow-up or biopsy may have to be performed. Most of the biopsies confirm that no cancer was present. It is estimated that a woman who has yearly mammograms between ages 40 and 49 has about a 30 percent chance of having a false-positive mammogram at some point in that decade and about a 7 percent to 8 percent chance of having a breast biopsy within the 10-year period. The estimate for false-positive mammograms is about 25 percent for women ages 50 or older. Women should always inform their physician or x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant. See the Safety page for more information about pregnancy and x-rays.

U.S. scientists hold talks with AIMS for research on breast cancer

Scientists from the New York University School of Medicine are here for preliminary talks with the Amrita Cancer Institute at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) for collaboration on world-wide research on breast cancer.
In a project promoted by the New York University, three other centres apart from New York have been identified for a multi-disciplinary study on advanced breast cancer. Cape Town in South Africa, Mexico City, Mexico and Kochi were listed as study centres considering the increased number of breast cancers reported from these places.
Paolo Toniolo, Director of the Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who is involved in studying the role of hormones and nutrition in cancers in women, especially in the breast, will be heading the medical team in the study.
"We have the study in two parts. One is to identify the biological reasons as to why some women respond well to treatment even in advanced stages of breast cancer, while some do not respond even in the early stages. A clue in this regard will help modify the treatment of cancer according to the ability of the patient's response," said Prof. Toniolo.
The second part of the study is the socio-cultural and biological factors related to the diagnosis of breast cancer. Kristin Bright is the overall programme coordinator for the research project at the University in collecting data on the international level from the three outside centres.
"My job is to document social, cultural and economic factors influencing the late diagnosis of breast cancer in women. It may be fear, poverty, ignorance or the last priority that a woman gets in a household. Or it may be a combination of all factors", said Prof. Bright, who is a medical anthropologist.
A study would help the oncologists and the public health authorities to intervene in the right manner to check cancers of breast, which are being increasingly reported in developing countries, said Prof. Toniolo. The U.S. has the largest number of cases of breast cancer, he added.
From various studies taken up in different parts of the world, it is now known that the increase in breast cancer is because of change in lifestyle, said Prof. Toniolo. The genetic factors play only a 10 per cent role, he said. The rest are factors related to environmental and lifestyle changes, he added.
The socio-cultural background is essential here since it is a lifestyle disease. Prof. Bright will be preparing the questionnaire after interacting with patients and will be modifying the questions to suit the cultural demand.

Breast cancer cure for young girls

Breast cancer is the fifth most common cancer. Mostly found in womens over 30s.In the United States, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women, and the second most common cause of cancer death in women
Early breast cancer can in some cases present as breast pain (mastodynia) or a painful lump. Since the advent of breast mammography, breast cancer is most frequently discovered as an asymptomatic nodule on a mammogram, before any symptoms are present. A lump under the arm or above the collarbone that does not go away may be present. Other possible symptoms or medical signs include nipple discharge, bleeding from the nipple, new nipple inversion, and changes in the skin overlying the breast, often resembling an orange peel, known as peau d'orange. When breast cancer associates with skin inflammation, this is known as inflammatory breast cancer. In inflammatory breast cancer, the breast tumor itself is causing an inflammatory reaction of the skin, and this can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and redness throughout the entire breast.
Changes in the appearance or shape of the breast can raise suspicions of breast cancer.
Another reported symptom complex of breast cancer is Paget's disease of the breast. This syndrome presents as eczematoid skin changes at the nipple, and is a late manifestation of an underlying breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Ayurvedic Treatment :
The treatment of breast cancer is divided into two different drugs: Drugs for general treatment and Drugs for specific treatment. The general treatment is based on the drugs which subdue the abnormal growth, clean the blood and muscular tissues, restore the balance of the bodily systems, maintain the stamina and heal the ulceration.
The specific treatment depends upon the condition of the breast cancer that is drug for neuralgic condition, drug for hard tumor, drug for lipoma, drug for myoma, drug for angioma, drug for neoplasm developed within the ulcer or wound and drug for adenoma.
Breast Cancer Alternative Medicines :
Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D. - "Conventional cancer therapy is so toxic and dehumanizing that I fear it far more than I fear death from cancer. We know that conventional therapy doesn't work--if it did, you would not fear cancer any more than you fear pneumonia. It is the utter lack of certainty as to the outcome of conventional treatment that virtually screams for more freedom of choice in the area of cancer therapy. Yet most alternative therapies regardless of potential or proven benefit, are outlawed, which forces patients to submit to the failures that we know don't work, because there's no other choice."
